Melanie Veley, Youth Volunteer Corps
Before going to high school, Melanie Veley felt a little apprehensive. She did not know a lot of people and was worried about making friends. Her mother suggested that she should start volunteering with Youth Volunteer Corps to help her meet some new people. Melanie thought that it would be boring, but decided to give volunteering a chance. Her mom was on to something. It turned out to be a great idea.

Melanie has now been volunteering with Youth Volunteer Corps for five years. She has spent many hours at many community organizations, including Canadian Blood Services donor clinics, Loaves and Fishes, MS Society, Brockville & Area Community Living Association and United Way.

Her experience with YVC has been a lot of fun. She has met a lot of great people and they always have an enjoyable time volunteering, whether the activities are exciting or not. Melanie’s favourite volunteer experience was at Brockville & Area Community Living Association. There, YVC helped the clients with a Shakespearian drama production. It was very exciting to see them learning about Shakespeare and experiencing drama firsthand.

“Volunteering in general is really amazing. If you have any free time (especially teens), get out in the community and give back,” says Melanie. Melanie knows she is making a difference and she is happy to contribute to so many difference agencies within the community.

Having volunteered for United Way, Melanie knows its importance. “United Way is a really good organization. If you are going to donate, you should donate to United Way. You might not need it now, but it could come to the rescue later on.” United Way has been there for Melanie by supporting Youth Volunteer Corps. You never know when you or your family might need this support, so donate today to build a strong United Way for tomorrow.
