United Way Leeds & Grenville celebrates its 2025 campaign and the people building a stronger community

Leeds & Grenville, ON – April 23 – United Way Leeds & Grenville (UWLG) proudly celebrated its 2025 campaign, Hope Starts with You, with an unforgettable Volunteer Breakfast on April 23 at the Cedar Valley Golf & Country Club. The sold-out event brought together over 125 supporters, community leaders, volunteers, and agency partners, all united by one shared mission: to build a more compassionate and resilient Leeds & Grenville.

Generously sponsored by Brockville Hyundai, the event showcased the power of the Hope Starts with You campaign—an inspiring call to action highlighting both individual and collective impact. Attendees enjoyed beautifully decorated cookies from Pastry King’s Princess in Elizabethtown and handmade caramels from Pickle & Myrrh in Merrickville — thoughtful tokens of appreciation that reflected the generosity and spirit of the community.

The morning featured keynote speaker Wendy Galloway, Employment Services Manager at Career Services and recipient of the Lifetime Volunteer Achievement Award from the Brockville & District Chamber of Commerce. A dedicated United Way volunteer, Wendy previously served a decade as Chair for the Health & Social Service Sector on the Campaign Cabinet. Her heartfelt story of community involvement from a young age inspired attendees to reflect on the role each of us can play in building a stronger community.

United Way Leeds & Grenville was also proud to present its 2025 Volunteer Awards, recognizing individuals and workplaces that demonstrated exceptional leadership, generosity, and community spirit.

“Volunteerism is alive and well in Leeds & Grenville, and at United Way we’re deeply grateful for the continued support from our community,” said UWLG Board Chair, Ian McFall. Hailie Jack, Executive Director adds “What makes this work so powerful is the connection between the people who give their time and the agencies delivering critical services. Today is about celebrating not only the impact of our funded partners, but also the volunteers who make that impact possible every single day.”

Chairs Cups were presented to organizations that led the way in their sectors through successful United Way Workplace Campaigns, while individual and special recognition awards honoured those who went above and beyond in their commitment to making a difference.

Leeds & Grenville, ON — grab your clubs and golf for a cause on August 13!

United Way Leeds & Grenville (UWLG), in partnership with the Brown family, is pleased to announce that public registration is now open for the 6th Annual Gord Brown Memorial Golf Tournament, taking place on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at the renowned Smugglers Glen Golf Course.

Now in its sixth year, the tournament honours the extraordinary legacy of the late Gord Brown, past Member of Parliament for Leeds–Grenville–Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes. The event brings together golfers, community leaders, sponsors, and supporters for a memorable day of golf, camaraderie, and community impact.

“As Gord’s brother, I am proud to be an honorary Co-Chair alongside Gord’s son, Chance,” said Jeff Brown. “This tournament continues to be a strong example of how Gord gave back to his community and how his legacy lives on through the lives impacted across Leeds Grenville–Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes.”

A Legacy of Giving

Since Gord Brown’s passing eight years ago, more than $1 million has been raised in his name through memorial golf and hockey tournaments. The first five Gord Brown Memorial Golf Tournaments alone have generated more than $900,000 in support of community needs and causes close to Gord’s heart.

Supporting Community Impact

Proceeds from the tournament will benefit United Way Leeds & Grenville, supporting vital programs throughout the region focused on housing and homelessness, food insecurity, mental health and addictions, and empowering children and youth.

United Way Leeds & Grenville Launches Top 7 Over 70™ Awards to Honour Inspiring Community Leaders

Leeds & Grenville, ON – United Way Leeds & Grenville is inviting the community to come together to recognize and celebrate the individuals whose lives and contributions have helped shape the region we call home.

The Top 7 Over 70™ Awards will honour seven extraordinary individuals over the age of 70 who continue to make a meaningful impact through leadership, volunteerism, and service. These are the people who built our communities and who continue to give their time, energy, and heart to make Leeds & Grenville stronger.

Too often, these stories go unrecognized. This program shines a light on those who are still making a difference today — proving that purpose, generosity, and impact have no age limit.

“This is about more than an award,” said Hailie Jack, Executive Director at United Way Leeds & Grenville. “It’s about honouring the people who have given so much to our community — and who continue to do so. It’s about making sure they feel seen, valued, and celebrated.”

Community members are encouraged to nominate someone who has made a difference — a neighbour, mentor, volunteer, or leader whose story deserves to be shared.

The program will culminate in a community celebration on October 30th at the North Grenville Municipal Centre , where recipients will be honoured and their stories brought to life. More details will be announced in the coming weeks.

United Way is also inviting local businesses and organizations to support the event through sponsorship, helping ensure these individuals are recognized in a way that reflects their impact.

Volunteers are at the heart of strong communities, and on April 23, 2026, United Way Leeds & Grenville will gather to celebrate the people who helped make our 2025 Campaign a success.

Our annual Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast will take place at Cedar Valley Golf & Country Club (7041 County Road 29, Brockville) . The morning brings together volunteers, community partners, local businesses, and social service agencies to recognize the impact we create when we work together.

Guests will enjoy a full breakfast buffet featuring scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, ham, home fries, French toast, pancakes, toast, coffee, tea, and juice while connecting with others who are passionate about strengthening our community.

A collaborative roadmap to strengthen impact and respond to the evolving needs of Leeds & Grenville.

United Way Leeds & Grenville is proud to introduce our 2025–2028 Strategic Plan , a roadmap that will guide our work over the next three years as we continue strengthening our community.

This plan was developed through a collaborative process that included insights from our 2023 community conversations, along with input from partner agencies, donors, volunteers, and other community stakeholders. With the guidance of an experienced strategic planner, our Board of Directors and staff team worked together to ensure the plan reflects the real needs and priorities of people across Leeds & Grenville.

The result is a clear and focused strategy built around five key directions: strengthening fundraising and sustainability, enhancing board and volunteer development, ensuring organizational stability, expanding awareness and thought leadership, and defining and investing in the community’s greatest needs.

At its core, this plan reaffirms United Way Leeds & Grenville’s role as a trusted community convener, responsible steward of donor investments, and catalyst for meaningful change. It positions us to respond to urgent challenges today while building a stronger, more connected community for the future.

Created in 2015, this award recognizes graduating students in Leeds & Grenville who have demonstrated leadership and a strong commitment to volunteerism in their community.

Available to graduating secondary school students in Leeds & Grenville
Applicants must be accepted into a post-secondary program
Volunteer involvement and financial need are key criteria

211 Day 2026: One Number to Reach Hundreds of Vital Community Services

February 11, 2026 – United Way Centraide Canada (UWCC) and 211 service partners across the country join communities in celebrating 211 Day by raising awareness of the life-changing impacts of reaching out to 211 online, by phone or text to find community services.

Available 365 days a year and in more than 150 languages depending on the region, 211 is a free, confidential information and referral helpline that connects people to vital community, social and government services. As a founding partner of 211 in Canada, UWCC provides critical funding and national support.

On 211 Day, communities illuminate landmarks and monuments across the country in red for United Glow to bring attention to this critical service. The full and updated list of illuminations is available on UWCC’s website .

211 Strengthens Communities

Demand for 211 services demonstrates the essential role that 211 plays across Canada. From January to September 2025, 211 navigators answered 438,899 calls , 38,105 texts , and 19,776 other contacts , a total of 496,780 interactions .

211 has been a vital resource when communities are hit with hurricanes and wildfires, helping with emergency response and recovery. Every day, people in Canada rely on 211 to find supports and navigate access to services.

Bridging the Gap: Help Starts Here

Across Canada, 211 data provide valuable information to governments and service providers about changing needs and service gaps. Housing/shelter and mental health assessment and treatment have consistently remained within the top five identified needs annually from 2022 to 2025. Both housing/shelter and mental health assessment and treatment needs have increased year over year in 2023 and 2024, with early data trending towards a similar increase in 2025.

These trends underline service gaps caused by limited resources, insufficient staffing, and eligibility barriers. Community needs continue to outpace availability of services, suggesting current funding for services is not keeping up with community needs.

People Helping People

At the heart of 211 are community navigators. As trained information and referral specialists, 211 navigators have access to a broad database to help people find services.

As one Navigator has said: “When you’re lost and you don’t know what to do, people know they can call us, and a real person will answer.”

Acting as a front door, they help people to find the right referral, for the right need, at the right time. Whether calling, texting, or searching online, community members can find compassionate, expert help navigating a complex landscape of government and community services. Help is just three digits away!

Supporting Government Priorities

211 maintains the country’s largest database of community and government services, collaborating with government to connect people to public services and provides information about available services and service gaps. By investing in 211 as a centralized access point, governments can ensure that residents are only three digits away from the care and support they richly deserve.

To reach 211, anyone can dial or text 2-1-1, visit the newly enhanced website to access their regional 211 service, or download the 211 Canada app .

United Way Leeds & Grenville Achieves $900,000 Campaign Goal

Leeds & Grenville, ON – February 4, 2026 – United Way Leeds & Grenville

(UWLG) has successfully reached its 2025 fundraising goal of $900,000, thanks to the generosity and commitment of donors, volunteers, workplaces, and partners across the region.

Inspired by this year’s theme, Hope Starts with You , the community came together to support local programs and services that help people and families when they need it most.

“I’m incredibly proud of our staff, Board, Campaign Cabinet, and Champions who worked hard right through the finish line,” said Board Chair Ian McFall. “This milestone wouldn’t be possible without the support of our community.”

Campaign Chair Darren Gallacher added, “Reaching $900,000 means real, measurable impact across Leeds & Grenville. This achievement belongs to everyone who gave, volunteered, or supported the campaign.”

UWLG’s Community Investment process is now underway, with volunteers reviewing applications to direct funds where they will have the greatest local impact. The organization continues its work year-round through workplace campaigns, events, and volunteer opportunities.

Leeds & Grenville, ON - United Way Leeds & Grenville Exploring Sale of Current Building as Part of Long-Term Sustainability Planning

United Way Leeds & Grenville (UWLG) is exploring the sale of its current building as part of a broader effort to ensure long-term financial sustainability and continued community impact.

United Way Leeds & Grenville emphasizes that it is not closing and not leaving the community.

As part of this process, UWLG will be issuing a Request for Proposals (RFP) for local realtors to support the sale of the building. Once a realtor is selected, the organization will take thoughtful, measured steps toward identifying a new space that aligns with its operational needs and mission.

“This decision is about being good stewards of our resources,” said Hailie Jack Executive Director. “Our commitment to the people of Leeds & Grenville remains unchanged. We will continue to operate locally and invest in programs and services that support our community’s most pressing needs.”

There will be no disruption to United Way’s programs, funding, or services because of this decision. Staff will remain in place, and community partners and donors can expect continuity throughout the transition.

United Way Leeds & Grenville will share updates as the process moves forward and remains committed to transparency every step of the way.

Guided by our Community Impact Study and Community Conversations, our investments are focused on intentional, long-term solutions that address the most pressing needs in our region. Funding applications must align with one of United Way’s three pillars and demonstrate measurable outcomes that create lasting change.

Projects must also address at least one of the six priority needs identified by our community:

As 2025 draws to a close, United Way Leeds & Grenville is pausing to say thank you. Because of the generosity of donors, volunteers, workplaces, and partners, hundreds of local programs and services were supported this year — helping families access food, supporting children and youth, keeping seniors connected, and strengthening mental health and addiction supports across Leeds & Grenville.

“We have seen the very best of our community this year,” said Hailie Jack, Executive Director of United Way Leeds & Grenville. “And we are so close to reaching our campaign goal.”

With the finish line in sight, United Way is asking those who can consider making a gift — or an additional gift — to help close the remaining gap. Reaching the $900,000 goal will provide stability for local agencies and ensure vital supports are in place as we head into 2026, a year many know will continue to bring real challenges for individuals and families.

“This final stretch matters,” added Jack. “It means local programs can plan with confidence, frontline staff can continue their work, and people who rely on these services know their community has not forgotten them.”

Every contribution, no matter the size, helps turn uncertainty into stability and compassion into action. Community members are invited to help carry this momentum forward and ensure help is there when it’s needed most.

United Way Leeds & Grenville announces the Ultimate Burger Battle campaign raised over $5,000

United Way Leeds & Grenville announces the Ultimate Burger Battle campaign raised over $5,000 with more than 2,000 burgers sold at participating establishments during the November 1–30, 2025

Thank you to our event sponsors: Henderson Digital Marketing & Printing, Hometown TV12, Giant FM 103.7 and MyFM 104.9 for bringing Leeds and Grenville a burger month with purpose, blending flavour with philanthropy and competition. We are grateful to our community partners who elevated this event and made it possible with more than $7,000 provided through gift in kind support.

The 2025 campaign saw 13 eateries participate, each devising a unique burger creation to sell throughout the month. At the end of it all, United Way Leeds & Grenville delivered special awards to the top performing restaurants and thanked everyone for their participation by celebrating their efforts with a big cheque.

The most coveted award is ULTIMATE BURGER of the YEAR. After tallying the scores, Stoodley's Kitchen and Beverage (9 Water St, Elgin) came out on top, making their Smoke Show the Ultimate Burger of 2025. It featured: two 3oz fresh chuck smash patties seared to perfection and stacked with crispy bacon, melted cheddar, crispy fried onions, shredded lettuce, pickles, and a sweet smoky BBQ sauce — all on a toasted brioche bun. Big crunch, bigger flavor.

Over the course of the month, 7 ambassadors were asked to sample the burger menu at each restaurant and rank them on presentation, taste, originality and overall execution. Cedar Valley Golf & Country Club (7041 County Rd 29, Elizabethtown), was runner up with their True North Burger and 1000 Islands Brewery (65 King Street West, Brockville) took 3 ^rd with their Better Mac Burger.

The title of Most Ultimate Burgers Sold will be awarded to Karra’s Burgers & Fries (329 Stewart Blvd, Brockville), who sold a total of 431 Pump Up the Jam burgers.

Finally, throughout the month, fans were able to vote for their favourite burger, with the top three receiving the People’s Choice award. People’s Choice Ultimate Burger will be awarded to:

• 1st Place: Karra’s Burger & Fries (329 Stewart Blvd, Brockville)

• 2nd Place: Stoodley's Kitchen and Beverage (9 Water St, Elgin)

• 3rd Place: Sam’s Grill (50 King St E, Brockville)

On December 12, local leaders from Rideau Lakes joined us at Stoodley’s Kitchen and Beverage to celebrate their impressive accomplishment in this years Ultimate Burger Battle. Mayor Hoogenboom recognized the restaurants strong contribution to local economic development, while United Way highlighted how their participation demonstrates the strength of rural communities and what is possible when an establishment fully embraces this event.

Located in the heart of Rideau Lakes a municipality of nearly 11,000 residents Stoodley’s delivered outstanding results. Not only did they earn the highest scoring burger at 92% but they also achieved the second highest number of burgers sold and the second highest number of People’s Choice votes.

Recommendations to the Government of Ontario for the 2025-2030 Poverty Reduction Strategy Renewal

Introduction

Ontario United Ways appreciate the opportunity to contribute to the provincial government’s 2025–2030 Poverty Reduction Strategy consultation.

This is a time for bold leadership. As Ontario faces rising costs and growing economic uncertainty, reducing poverty is not only a social imperative, but also essential to sustaining a strong workforce, supporting local economies and securing the province’s long-term economic growth and prosperity.

While the 2020–2025 Poverty Reduction Strategy made progress in connecting people to employment, rising economic pressures are driving poverty rates higher, especially among groups facing systemic barriers, including Indigenous Peoples, Black and racialized communities, youth, newcomers, and single-parent households. Poverty in Ontario has increased since 2019 and is rising faster than the national average. In 2023, 1.9 million Ontarians lived below the poverty line, unable to afford the necessities for a dignified life. This was up from 1.1 million in 2020. [1] Since 2020, the number of children in poverty in Ontario has more than doubled. [2]

A 2025-2030 Poverty Reduction Strategy – with transparent, measurable goals for reducing poverty and deep poverty, coupled with supporting indicators for housing, food insecurity, access to services, employment stability, equity of outcomes, and more – presents a critical opportunity to address the conditions that both pull people into poverty and keep them there, while strengthening the province’s social and economic infrastructure.

United Ways are ready to partner with the Government of Ontario to advance a community data-informed Poverty Reduction Strategy that delivers measurable results for residents and the province. Our joint submission provides practical, evidence-based recommendations to help people live with dignity, access safe and affordable housing, secure, stable and rewarding work, and receive the supports they need to succeed and thrive.

The Government of Ontario can meaningfully alleviate poverty and build the social and economic infrastructure needed for the future prosperity of the province by:

1. Laying the groundwork for financial security, good jobs and strong local economies

2. Getting people housed and keeping them housed by expanding non-market affordable housing, investing in supportive housing, and strengthening renter and tenant protections

3. Ensuring the sustainability of Ontario’s community services infrastructure to continue delivering the critical services that meet the unique needs of communities across the province

1. Laying the groundwork for financial security, good jobs and strong local economies

We commend the government for raising Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) rates and committing to tying future increases to the rate of inflation – a practical and common-sense solution. Yet, ODSP rates remain far from adequate to meet basic needs, leaving many recipients in poverty. A single person receives a maximum of $1,408 per month, while the poverty line in Ontario for a single person is approximately $2,221 per month. Ontario Works (OW) rates remain frozen since 2018, with no adjustment for inflation. While OW exit rates have risen, for those that face significant barriers to stable, well-paying employment, the current assistance is not enough. A single recipient on OW receives $733/month, including a $390 shelter allowance – far below the poverty line. [3]

All too often the financial penalties that kick in as people try to transition to stable employment, such as loss of essential income and rental subsidies, act as disincentives, undermining their efforts and keeping them on social assistance. Ontario United Ways and partners know that the equitable neighbourhoods and communities we work towards are only achievable when people are financially stable. Increasing minimum wage, ODSP, and OW rates to livable levels would not only provide immediate relief for lower-income earners, but it would also benefit businesses, boost worker health and well-being, and create a positive multiplier effect in local economies [4] .

Precarious work, characterized by low wages, instability and limited access to benefits and support is also rising, leaving many workers without the means to stay healthy, productive, and employed. Efforts to provide equal rights and protections to all workers and identify clear pathways to more stable, better paying jobs is critical to supporting and attracting the workers needed to maintain a strong economy.

In addition to the trades, infrastructure investments can provide pathways to professional, administrative, and technical jobs, and better economic opportunities for residents from historically disenfranchised communities who have not benefited from previous development. Tools such as Community Benefits Agreements (CBAs) can create targeted employment, training, and apprenticeship opportunities, new procurement pathways for local small businesses and suppliers, and improved neighbourhood amenities for residents.

To establish the foundation for all Ontarians to have the means to live in dignity, obtain secure, well-paying jobs, and benefit from economic investments in their communities, we urge government to:

· Raise ODSP and OW rates to livable levels to ensure they meet the basic needs of individuals and families, and index OW rates to inflation annually to ensure they continue to keep pace with the rising cost of living.

· Raise the provincial minimum wage to match the calculated living wage across Ontario to ensure that all workers earn enough to cover their basic needs, improve worker productivity and contribute to local economic growth.

· Address financial barriers and uncertainties that hinder individuals transitioning from social assistance to stable employment through providing smoother transitions off assistance, including temporary continuation of housing and benefit supports and earned income exemptions during early employment, to avoid the ‘poverty trap’ created by clawbacks and sudden loss of supports.

· Ensure Ontarians have access to the knowledge and training to keep up with rapidly changing technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence.

· Remain attentive to deep shifts in the job market, including the displacement and elimination of entry-level and mid-level jobs, and equip job seekers with in-demand skills and training. This is particularly important for both youth and newcomers – two demographics facing increasingly concerning unemployment rates.

· Continue to invest in creating sustainable, stable employment opportunities with a focus on accessible skills training and culturally appropriate wraparound supports for people facing multiple barriers to employment. This includes individuals transitioning from social assistance to sustained employment, Indigenous Peoples, and structurally disadvantaged communities.

· Ensure that any large infrastructure investments coming to Ontario include local economic partnerships that train local community members in the skilled trade jobs that are critically needed to keep the economy going.

2. Getting people housed and keeping them housed by expanding non-market affordable housing, investing in supportive housing, and strengthening renter and tenant protections

A safe, affordable, and accessible home is the first step in ensuring a stable life, foundational for people to access employment, educational opportunities, adequate food, and other support. Yet across Ontario, people face critical barriers to housing, particularly low-income individuals and families. One third of all Ontario households are renters [5] , with almost a quarter paying rents that are unaffordable [6] . Housing unaffordability is also associated with poorer physical and mental health outcomes [7] which in addition to the impact on individual well-being, increases pressure on other provincial programs and services.

High rates of core housing need, particularly among renters, single-earner households and Indigenous households are not being met and those experiencing or at risk of homelessness are finding themselves in more desperate circumstances with fewer options. Deeply affordable housing options are also shrinking, pushing more people into homelessness. Every year, billions are spent on the fallout of the housing crisis – on shelters, emergency and hospital visits and other public systems – nearly $1 billion is spent annually on emergency shelters in Ontario. [8]

Regional and demographic variations also create distinct challenges in addressing affordable housing across Ontario. Concerns around affordability continue to be high in the Greater Toronto Area and surrounding areas with Toronto households experiencing core housing need at nearly double the rate of other regions. At the same time, northern, rural, and First Nations communities face particular challenges related to poor repair and higher construction costs. [9] Affordable and supportive housing is also more difficult to access in northern and remote communities, contributing to issues of housing precarity or displacement. With rural homelessness in Ontario increasing at a faster rate than urban homelessness [10] , planning and investment in affordable and deeply affordable supply must account for the unique needs and development models suitable to successfully addressing housing need in rural environments.

A strategy designed to alleviate poverty must address housing instability and explore ways to not only get individuals access stable, affordable housing, but to stay housed. To achieve the goal of providing a range of safe, affordable and accessible housing options to protect lower-income Ontarians and strengthen the housing ecosystem, we urge the provincial government to:

· Invest in the community housing sector by providing up-front, low-barrier preconstruction funding and invest in supportive housing by guaranteeing operational funding attached to capital funding.

· Provide more government-owned surplus or under-utilized lands and assets to nonprofit housing and co-operative housing providers at no or low cost to grow deeply affordable and supportive housing options.

· Launch a Government of Ontario non-profit rental acquisition program to preserve existing affordable housing stock to reduce the net loss of housing units while also giving non-profits the opportunity to intensify on those sites to add new housing units.

· Increase interministerial coordination and collaboration by creating infrastructure, such as a provincial housing secretariat function, and supporting small and rural local governments through dedicated programs to build their capacity and expertise in securing funding for housing projects.

· Support low- to moderate-income renter households by preventing evictions and ‘renovictions’ and stabilizing housing so they can live in affordable and secure rental homes.

· Prioritize and address the persistent housing and homelessness challenges faced by Indigenous Peoples through a dedicated strategy, programs and supports developed and implemented by Indigenous leaders and diverse Indigenous communities.

· Identify concrete investments in expanding safe, emergency and transitional housing options designed for women and children fleeing violence and protect the range of affordable housing options that help survivors access and live in secure homes.

· In partnership with municipal governments, prioritize the community housing sector through development incentives and flexible programs that maximize the sector's capacity to compete in the housing market effectively.

3. Ensuring the sustainability of Ontario’s community services infrastructure to continue delivering the critical services and upstream preventative supports that meet the unique needs of communities across the province

The community services sector plays a critical role in providing essential services and supports to Ontarians, especially in the face of increasingly complex and enduring social issues. From mental health and addictions services, affordable, transitional, and supportive housing, employment and skills building, childcare, food security, addressing race-, gender- and faith-based violence, settlement services, and building social connection for seniors and others, community services are critical to our social and economic fabric and collective prosperity. These services and supports play an essential role in preventing homelessness, unemployment, and mental health and other challenges through emergency or urgent needs funding programs. The nonprofit sector in Ontario also contributes 7.9% to the province’s GDP, constituting $65.4 billion in economic impact.

Funding deficits, an unprecedented need for services, significant challenges in recruiting and retaining staff, and a toll on the mental health of frontline workers themselves are eroding the stability and sustainability of Ontario’s vital community services infrastructure. Many workers in the sector – predominantly female and racialized – are precariously employed, receiving lower wages than their private and public sector counterparts. Volunteerism and charitable giving are also steadily declining [11] [12] , putting further strain on the sector as it fills the gaps to respond to a growing mental health, addictions, and housing crisis.

There is an urgent need to collaboratively identify public policy solutions to mitigate current challenges and establish a sustainable model that will effectively support the sector many Ontarians increasingly depend on today and into in the future.

United Ways urge government to:

· Transition to stable, flexible, long-term operational funding, adjusted for inflation, that reflects the full cost of delivering services and programs, allows for competitive wages, reduces administrative burden, and can be adjusted to respond to changing community needs.

· Support the development of a sector-wide labour force strategy and workforce development plan that will attract, retain and train workers while reducing precarious work conditions and delivering wage parity.

· Invest in new and innovative approaches to funding and service delivery in rural and remote communities, including those that address the housing and mental health and addictions crises and respond to the unique needs of equity-deserving groups.

· Partner with the sector to explore possible strategies to support the recovery of volunteerism and charitable giving in the province.

· Establish a permanent home within government for the social services sector to streamline policy and program coordination across Ministries and sector partners.

With deep reach into communities across Ontario, United Ways stand ready to collaborate with government to drive bold, evidence-based solutions that address poverty’s root causes and build a more equitable and prosperous Ontario for all. Now is the time to consolidate our efforts, share experience and work towards a Poverty Reduction Strategy that builds the foundation for a better future for each an every Ontarian.

Ontario United Ways express concern that proposed changes will escalate the homelessness crisis across Ontario

United Ways Ontario – Statement on Bill 60, Fighting Delays, Building Faster Act, 2025

Ontario is at a critical point. Housing need is rising, homelessness is growing, federal investment is starting to move but housing starts in Ontario are falling. Decisions made now will set the course for years.

The proposed legislative changes to the Residential Tenancies Act in Bill 60 move policy in the wrong direction and will serve to escalate the homelessness crisis across Ontario. They weaken security of tenure, speed evictions, narrow review windows and reduce compensation in no-fault cases. This is not a solution for people who are precariously housed and will level even greater pressure on municipalities and community agencies struggling to address need.

Now, the focus should be on keeping people housed while new supply comes online. That means maintaining reasonable grace periods for arrears, ensuring tenants can raise legitimate health and safety concerns without undue barriers, preserving fair compensation and clear standards in no-fault evictions with consequences for bad-faith cases and keeping review and appeal timelines workable so disputes are resolved on their merits. These measures protect due process, prevent avoidable evictions, and steady the system as we build.

We join colleagues from across the community services sector in calling on the Province to repeal Schedule 12 of Bill 60 and commit to meaningful consultation with tenants and sector partners on proposed amendments to the Residential Tenancies Act and provincial housing policies that impact tenants.

United Ways across Ontario partner with regional and municipal governments and are ready to work with the Province to keep people housed while Ontario builds the homes our communities need.

Financial stress leaving people vulnerable beyond their wallets: United Way Centraide Canada calls for stronger community supports

New survey finds 42 per cent of people living in Canada could cover expenses for less than a month if their income was lost

OTTAWA, ON - October 15, 2025 - New survey findings from Léger and United Way Centraide Canada reveal that financial stress is leaving people living in Canada vulnerable far beyond their wallets, deepening the risk of poverty for many who are already struggling to make ends meet.

According to the United Way Centraide Financial Anxiety Survey conducted by Léger, more than half (55%) of people living in Canada feel anxious about their personal finances. Nearly as many (41%) report physical stress symptoms when talking about money, and 42% say they would only be able to cover their basic expenses for less than one month if they lost their main source of income.

“Across Canada, as affordability challenges deepen and economic uncertainty grows, United Way Centraides and essential community services are seeing an increasing demand for support. These findings underscore the significant financial stress facing people in Canada— especially low-income individuals and families,” said Dan Clement, President and CEO of United Way Centraide Canada. “This stress is taking a toll on mental health and well-being, driving a rising need for strong, community-based supports."

Financial stress hits home and is hardest for lower-income people living in Canada. The survey shows how financial strain disrupts daily life. More than one-third (35%) of people living in Canada report trouble sleeping, nearly a third (32%) experience family conflict or tension, and three in ten (30%) say money-related worries make it difficult to focus at work or school.

The burden is sharpest for lower-income households: nearly half (47%) of those with household income under $40,000 lose sleep because of money issues, and two-thirds (67%) report feeling anxious about their finances. By comparison, 27% and 47%, respectively, of those earning over $100,000 report the same experiences.

Yet financial stress cuts across all income levels. Behaviours like avoiding conversations about money and experiencing household conflict remain consistent regardless of earnings.

Brockville, ON – Oct 1st, 2025 – The future of the Weekender Program for Students (WP4S) , a vital 10-year initiative, providing food baggies each weekend throughout the school year to local students who live with food insecurity, has been secured through a new partnership with Loaves & Fishes.

The WP4S was looking for a new home, a Canada Revenue Agency Registered charity for the 2025/26 school year. Recognizing its importance, Loaves & Fishes has stepped forward to “adopt” the WP4S, providing financial oversight, operational support, and governance to ensure its stability and long-term success.

Donations for the Weekender Program for Students will now be accepted and receipted by Loaves & Fishes (please put WP4S in the memo/comment section of the donation). Both Loaves & Fishes and the Weekender Program for Students will operate with their own budgets, and both rely on the continued support of the community to thrive.

Laura Roobol, the 10-year volunteer Coordinator of the WP4S, will continue to provide day to day program management, and will execute the program with the assistance of the 23 dedicated WP4S volunteers, all supported by Loaves & Fishes’ Board of Directors and team.

This partnership was facilitated with the support of United Way Leeds & Grenville (UWLG), which played a connector role to ensure the program could continue under the stewardship of an experienced community organization.

About the Weekender Program for Students

During the 24/25 school year the WP4S provided 378 weekend food baggies, every weekend, to local students (JK-G12) who live with food insecurity, across 22 schools in Leeds & Grenville. The WP4S team delivers 2 weeks of baggies to each Partner School, every other Wednesday, throughout the school year. The schools then discretely hand out the baggies on Fridays for the students to take home with them. The WP4S baggies help bridge the nutritional gap these students experience when school food programs are not available to them on the weekends.

Local Mayor Leads Community Appeal for Urgent Support

Leeds & Grenville, ON – United Way Leeds & Grenville, alongside Mayor Matt Wren, is calling on the community to come together in response to the devastating fire that has displaced and impacted local families. To meet this urgent need, United Way Leeds & Grenville is taking immediate action through two vital programs:

1. Urgent Needs Fund – Immediate Relief for Families Through the Urgent Needs Fund, United Way provides direct financial assistance to fire victims. These funds are used quickly and flexibly for essentials such as emergency housing, food, and clothing—helping families stabilize and begin rebuilding their lives right away.

2. Emergency Response Grant – Strengthening Community Recovery United Way is also launching a new Emergency Response Grant , designed to help local nonprofits deliver critical relief and recovery services. These grants will be fast-tracked to ensure organizations on the frontlines have the resources they need to respond effectively. While inspired by this fire, the grant will remain in place as a standing resource for future emergencies, ensuring our region is prepared to respond quickly when disaster strikes.

How the Process Works

• Step 1: Community Appeal for Donations – United Way will serve as the trusted hub for emergency donations, ensuring contributions are coordinated and managed transparently.

• Step 2: Opening Agency Applications – Once funds are secured, eligible local agencies engaged in disaster response will be invited to apply for support.

• Step 3: Accountability and Recovery – Agencies receiving funds will report back on how dollars were used and the impact achieved, ensuring both transparency and measurable community outcomes.

“Families need help today, but our community also needs the tools to recover tomorrow,” said Mayor Matt Wren. “These two programs work hand in hand to ensure no one is left behind in this crisis.”

In the wake of the recent fire, United Way Leeds & Grenville (UWLG) has stepped in right away to provide assistance through its Urgent Needs Fund (UNF) . This includes helping some families who, as a result of the fire, have been left without a home.

The Urgent Needs Fund was created to support individuals and families across Leeds & Grenville who are at risk of homelessness due to extraordinary, unexpected costs. These modest one-time grants provide emergency financial assistance for essential needs such as a winter furnace repair, a car battery needed to maintain employment, or other urgent expenses. In circumstances like this fire, the UNF also helps families manage immediate needs following devastating losses.

While the UNF does not cover housing payments or arrears, it plays a vital prevention role by addressing sudden financial pressures that could otherwise push families into homelessness. Preventing this outcome not only spares families the disruption and trauma of losing their home but also helps reduce demand on already overstretched shelter and housing systems.

“When crisis hits—like the fire that displaced families in our community—the Urgent Needs Fund allows us to act immediately,” said Hailie Jack, Executive Director. “But the need doesn’t end here. We rely on the generosity of donors to ensure we can continue to respond when families are facing their darkest moments.”

BROCKVILLE, ON – May 1, 2025 – United Way Leeds & Grenville (UWLG) proudly launched its 2025 campaign, Hope Starts with You, with an unforgettable Volunteer Breakfast on May 1 at the Brockville Country Club. The sold-out event brought together over 100 supporters, community leaders, volunteers, and agency partners, all united by one shared mission: to build a more compassionate, resilient Leeds & Grenville.

Board Chair Ian McFall opened the morning with powerful reflections on the energy in the room, noting, “There is incredible energy in the room this morning. This is volunteer week in Canada. Volunteers make waves. A big thank you to all in attendance today, for your spirit of giving and volunteerism.”

The event, generously sponsored by Brockville Hyundai, marked the official unveiling of the Hope Starts with You campaign—an inspiring call to action that emphasizes the power of individual and collective impact. Attendees were gifted beautifully packaged seed pods donated by Developmental Services of Leeds & Grenville (DSLG), symbolizing how even the smallest acts of kindness can grow into lasting change.

The morning also featured three outstanding guest speakers—David Beatty, Chris Curry, and Jordi Wills—each sharing personal stories of leadership, service, and the transformative power of community. Their heartfelt messages underscored the campaign’s theme and reminded guests that hope truly does start with each of us.

United Way Leeds & Grenville was proud to present its 2024 Volunteer Awards to individuals and workplaces that demonstrated exceptional leadership, generosity, and community spirit throughout the year. Workplace awards—known as the Chairs Cups—were presented to organizations that led the way in their sectors through successful United Way campaigns. Individual and special recognition awards celebrated those who went above and beyond in their commitment to making a difference.

United Way Leeds & Grenville (UWLG) is pleased to announce that it raised $808,843.26 in its 2024 campaign

United Way Leeds & Grenville (UWLG) is pleased to announce that it raised $808,843.26 in its 2024 campaign thanks to the generous contributions of donors, volunteers and community partners. This will enable UWLG to continue its work in crucial areas such as housing, homelessness, food security, mental health, addiction, and youth support.

Last year proved to be a tough one for Canadian charities overall, facing economic challenges like ongoing inflation and an extended postal strike. UWLG was not immune to these difficulties, experiencing the same challenging fundraising conditions.

“We are so thankful that our donors recognized the essential role the United Way plays in meeting the needs of so many throughout Leeds and Grenville,” said UWLG Chair Ian McFall. “We set an incredibly ambitious goal and, while we did not quite get there, we are thrilled with the community’s response.”

The agency is entering a new phase of strategic planning to ensure it continues to thrive. “We are taking proactive steps to strengthen our financial foundation for the future, including refining our communication strategies, hosting community-focused events, building new partnerships, and exploring additional revenue streams,” said Executive Director Hailie Jack. ‘Our dedication to making a lasting, positive change remains as strong as ever, and we are more committed than ever to helping those who need it most.”

Youth Program Grants available

The Youth to Youth (Y2Y) Board of United Way Leeds & Grenville is currently accepting requests for funding from organizations who provide high quality programs and initiatives which would:

Benefit youth by providing opportunities to improve their physical, emotional and social needs. For example: sports, arts/culture, drama/dance/music.

Generate a positive outcome for youth including improved academic performance, classroom behaviour, health and nutrition. For example: tutoring, healthy meal or snack, etc.

Provide at-risk-youth with a safe, welcoming, inclusive environment with access to resources and support which will empower these young people to reach their full potential.

Encourage youth to work collaboratively to build safe, youth-friendly communities.

Eligibility (MUST be a registered charity as defined by the CRA)

Each successful applicant will be eligible for ONE Youth to Youth (Y2Y) Board Grant, to a maximum of $500, to be utilized for their program.
All grant applicants must be located in the United Counties of Leeds & Grenville to benefit the youth in our region.
Your organization cannot be receiving any other funding from United Way Leeds & Grenville.
The deadline to file grant applications will be 3:00 pm on Monday, March 24, 2025.
Late applications will not be accepted.
Grant applications will be assessed by the Youth to Youth (Y2Y) Board members, at their April meeting.
Should additional information be required, from your organization, you may be requested to provide the same, to the Youth to Youth (Y2Y) Board no later than March 31, 2025, at 3:00 pm.

Student Leaders of our Community Award

A United Way Leeds & Grenville initiative

General Information

In 2015, the United Way Leeds & Grenville was able to dedicate a portion of funds to supporting students in the local area who have demonstrated an active commitment to volunteerism.

The goal of the Student Leaders of our Community Award (SLCA) is to encourage ambitious high school students to be active in leadership roles throughout their community demonstrated through a dedication to volunteerism.

The Award

If you are a successful candidate of the SLCA, you will be awarded $500. There are four (4) awards available. Note: Awards may be split by the Bursary panel as their sole discretion.

Who is Eligible?

Bursaries are made to individuals who meet the following criteria:

• Student (including mature student) will be graduating from a secondary school in Leeds & Grenville (any schools belonging to the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) and the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO))

• Student has been accepted into a post-secondary program

• Student has demonstrated significant volunteer involvement in his/her community

• Student demonstrates financial need Application Requirements Completion of the application in full is a requirement in order to be considered. Proof of post-secondary acceptance is also necessary supporting documentation that must accompany the application.

Application Process

All materials must be submitted to your school principal and received by no later than Thursday, May 1, 2025. Please ensure your application is submitted in full. A pre-review will take place, at which time principals will pass along their recommendations to the United Way Leeds & Grenville bursary panel.

February 11 is 211 Day

Annually on February 11, Canadians come together to celebrate 211 Day (2/11) —a day dedicated to raising awareness about the 211 service and its vital role in supporting communities across the country. This year, on February 11, over 60 landmarks nationwide will illuminate in red for United Glow and 211 partners and staff from across Canada will unite in raising awareness and inspiring action through social media, advocating for sustained funding with all levels of government and hosting community events.

What is 211?

211 is a free, confidential service that provides everyone in Canada with easy access to information about essential government and community services. By simply dialing or texting 2-1-1, individuals are connected to a trained Resource Navigator who can offer information about local supports such as:

· food banks and communal meal programs

· income assistance programs

· legal resources

· support for mental health and addictions (counselling services)

· housing options including emergency shelters

· support for seniors, newcomers, and much more.

Available 24/7 and offering support in over 150 languages, help starts with 211. Visit 211.ca for information about your local 211.

Why is 211 Important?

Every year, 211 connects over 2 million Canadians to the help they need most.

In difficult times, people often don’t know where to turn for assistance. 211 serves as a lifeline, directing individuals to the appropriate services before they reach the point of crisis.

In 2023, 602,834 contacts made by phone, text, chat and email were answered by the 211 service, and 686,000 requests for support were handled by 211 Community Navigators. Housing and shelter were the top needs expressed in contacts with the 211 services followed by mental health supports.

211’s aggregated data also provides valuable information for decision-makers and program developers about top needs and service gaps in communities across the country.

For example, in the first half of 2024, housing and shelter resources accounted for 28% of the unmet needs identified in contacts to 211, while mental health resources accounted for 8% of the unmet needs. Unmet needs reflect a lack of local services to meet callers’ needs or a lack of capacity from the sector to respond to the level of need in a community. Information like this can help inform where further resources can be invested to make sure that people can access the support they need when they are faced with life’s challenges. These statistics can be customized to reflect regional data.

United Glow 2025: Illuminating Canada in Red

A key feature of 211 Day is United Glow, a nationwide initiative where landmarks, monuments, and buildings across Canada illuminate in red to symbolize that no one should face their struggles alone. This year, over 60 locations will shine brightly in support of 211.

You can get involved by visiting a participating landmark on February 11, snapping a photo, and sharing it on social media with the hashtags #211DayCanada , #UnitedGlow , and #HelpStartsHere .

United Way Leeds & Grenville Urges Community Support to Reach 2024 Campaign Goal.

United Way Leeds & Grenville (UWLG) Urges Community Support to Reach 2024 Campaign Goal. We are currently at 69% of our campaign goal and need your help to ensure critical services continue in 2025.

UWLG is calling on the community to come together and help us reach our 2024 fundraising campaign goal. The campaign ends on December 31st, and we need your help to ensure that over 20 vital programs across UWLG continue their important work into 2025.

As a community funded agency who receives no government funding, we play a crucial role in funding services that directly impact the most vulnerable members of our community. These programs include:

• Youth and senior meal programs

• Free income tax services

• Youth programming and mental health support

• Addictions services

• Subsidy programs for essential social services

Last year, we helped facilitate over 100,000 service provider interactions, and without continued donations, this vital work is at risk. Without these services, many in our community would face even greater inequities.

Every dollar counts. Every contribution helps.

The office is closed December 23rd to January 3rd. During this time, donations can be made online, by mail, or via email money transfer to accounting@uwlg.org. You can contact Hailie Jack, Executive Director over the holidays and expect a response within 24 hours.

We know that 2024 has been a challenging year for many and together, we can make a difference, so we are urging the community to open their hearts and give what they can. If 20,000 people across L&G gave $15, by December 31st we would reach our 2025 goal to ensure the sustainability of these vital programs can continue to operate in the new year. Your support is essential to helping our neighbors, friends, and family in L&G access the services they need to thrive.

As dedicated advocates for community well-being, 3M Canada and United Way Leeds & Grenville are excited to announce the upcoming series of 3M Harvest Lunch events, initiatives aimed at providing a wholesome meal to those experiencing food insecurity within our community.

From September 12th to October 3rd, the 3M Harvest Lunch Team will work with several United Way agencies to host events across Leeds & Grenville to serve and deliver lunches provided by local businesses. As we embrace the bountiful harvest season, we recognize the importance of coming together to support our neighbours and the 3M Harvest Lunch is a heartfelt effort to provide nourishing food, foster connections, and raise awareness about food insecurity.

Gord Brown Memorial Golf Tournament a Success!

Brockville & Kingston, ON – This year’s Gord Brown Memorial Golf Tournament in support of United Way Leeds & Grenville and the YMCA of Eastern Ontario has demonstrated the generosity of people in our region!

Record-breaking success! With the power of partnership between United Way Leeds & Grenville and the YMCA of Eastern Ontario, we’ve set a new benchmark by raising an incredible $218,580.00. This achievement is a testament to what we can accomplish together.

This includes funds raised from live and silent auctions. Monies raised will be shared between the two organizations in support of the most vulnerable people in our communities.

“We are so pleased to be able to support the great work of MP Gord Brown and his family by raising money for the community,” said Hailie Jack, Executive Director of United Way Leeds & Grenville. “Gord really set a standard of care and the Brown family is carrying on that legacy by helping to sustain local programs and services for those who most need them.”

Melissa strives towards community excellence in all she does with her engaging nature and spirit to inspire collective action. She was born and raised in the area; the community she chose to follow her lifelong passion for helping others by supporting the mission of a variety of not for profit organizations across Leeds & Grenville for nearly 15 years.

Melissa’s work has spanned community services and has included developmental, employment and business improvement initiatives. Events and resource development have been a strong focus of her most recent work with the board of directors of Brockville & District Chamber of Commerce and the Brockville Young Professionals Network, and Downtown Brockville. She enjoys living in a community where we have the time to learn from and understand how we can help each other. We're recruiting for our Campaign Cabinet!

Are YOU looking to make a BIG IMPACT in our community?

This is a volunteer role, working alongside other local leaders to increase stewardship and donations to UWLG. Our Cabinet will start meeting in June and wrap up at the end of November so you can enjoy the holiday season.

What we raise this year will determine what we can GIVE next year. Help us increase our donorship by joining our Cabinet and make 2025 the year of the BIG GIVE!

The Gord Brown Memorial Golf Tournament: See you on the links!

Brockville and Kingston ON: Mark your calendars for this year’s Gord Brown Memorial Golf Tournament on Wednesday, August 21 at Smuggler’s Glen Golf Course situated in Lansdowne in the beautiful Thousand Islands region. The tournament recognizes the work of the late MP Gord Brown on behalf of people in most need in our region.

Money raised goes to local programming supported by the United Way Leeds & Grenville and provided by the YMCA of Eastern Ontario. All programs aim to strengthen our communities and ignite the spark of our individual and collective potentials.

“The United Way Leeds & Grenville is very proud to carry on MP Gord Brown’s charitable vision of helping people in Leeds and Grenville. The funds raised from the tournament will not only support UWLG and the YMCA, but also the 21 Community Impact Programs, funded by UWLG,” said Hailie Jack, executive director of UWLG. “We are particularly proud of this tournament, a premier event that many look forward to each year. You can expect an exceptional day of golf, delicious food, hockey VIPs and of collective action to remember and honor MP Gord Brown’s legacy. Please join us for this special event and together we will support so many outstanding local non-profits that are making real long term lasting change in our communities.”

The current economic climate has put pressure on many in our community and anyone already struggling is particularly challenged during this time. Food insecurity, social isolation, opportunities for youth and housing affordability are just a few of the pressures that many in our region are grappling with. “Participants and sponsors may not realize the level of impact they have when they participate in the golf tournament or donate to the United Way or the YMCA,” said Rob Adams, CEO, YMCA of Eastern Ontario. “If we look at the impact to youth alone, last year, community support allowed the Y to provide about 30,000 meals through our youth programs. It is not unusual for kids to tell us that it is their first meal of the day or to ask to have food to take home to a sibling or a parent. We saw over 4,050 visits to Teen Night, almost 3,500 visits to the After School Drop-in and more than 430 visits to the Berm program in Gananoque from at-risk youth who want access to a safe and welcoming space for social engagement. Where else can these kids go to have supervised fun? When the community comes together a very real difference is made in people’s lives.”

Gord Brown’s family is proud to continue Gord’s legacy of giving back to our wonderful community. Gord’s mission was to ensure that everyone had an opportunity to thrive, and the Brown family is continuing this philanthropic work. Participating or sponsoring this event is a way to make this vision possible.

Golfers of all levels can support a worthwhile cause and enjoy a beautiful course – and have the opportunity to golf with a famous sports personality or two. This year’s tournament fees are $900 per foursome, $225 per person. Tournament fees include: golf, cart, special tastings/experiences at various holes, golf with NHL alumni, a chance to win fantastic prizes throughout the course, dinner and a live and silent auctions. The tournament has a 12 p.m. shotgun start.

Y2Y Board is accepting requests for funding

The Youth to Youth (Y2Y) Board of United Way Leeds & Grenville is currently accepting requests for funding from organizations who provide high quality programs and initiatives which would:

Benefit youth by providing opportunities to improve their physical, emotional and social needs. For example: sports, arts/culture, drama/dance/music.
Generate a positive outcome for youth including improved academic performance, classroom behaviour, health and nutrition. For example: tutoring, healthy meal or snack, etc.
Provide at-risk-youth with a safe, welcoming, inclusive environment with access to resources and support which will empower these young people to reach their full potential.
Encourage youth to work collaboratively to build safe, youth-friendly communities.

Eligibility (MUST be a registered charity as defined by the CRA)

Each successful applicant will be eligible for ONE Youth to Youth (Y2Y) Board Grant, to a maximum of $500, to be utilized for their program.
All grant applicants must be located in the United Counties of Leeds & Grenville to benefit the youth in our region.
Your organization cannot be receiving any other funding from United Way Leeds & Grenville.
The deadline to file grant applications will be 3:00 pm on Friday, April 12, 2024.
Late applications will not be accepted.
Grant applications will be assessed by the Youth to Youth (Y2Y) Board members, at their April meeting.

Should additional information be required, from your organization, you may be requested to provide the same, to the Youth to Youth (Y2Y) Board no later than April 19, 2024, at 3:00 pm.

United Way Leeds & Grenville is pleased to announce that local business and community leader Ian McFall will chair our fundraising cabinet for the 2024 campaign.

McFall, currently chair of UWLG’s board of directors, is executive vice president of Burnbrae Farms. Ian and his family have a long history of supporting worthwhile causes in the community. He has been a member of the United Way board of directors since 2020.

“Ian’s guidance as board chair led our team through trying years, the significant challenges of the pandemic, and recently a change in leadership here at United Way,” said Hailie Jack, Executive Director of United Way Leeds & Grenville. “He has demonstrated dedication and an unwavering commitment to this organization, and I am sure he will bring those qualities to his role as campaign cabinet chair.”

United Way Leeds & Grenville announces campaign total for 2023

Brockville, ON – Last year presented significant challenges for United Way Leeds & Grenville, but the organization still managed to come very close to its fundraising goal.

The books have closed on the 2023 campaign, and the agency announced today that it raised $883,679.04, or 94.51 per cent of its $935,000 fundraising goal.

“We were in the midst of a recruitment process for a new executive director during the heart of the campaign,” Board Chair Ian McFall explained. “I can’t say enough about the hard work of our dedicated employees, which allowed us to come so close to what we knew was an ambitious campaign goal. I’d also like to thank our donors for their generosity during a tough time. They always step up when the community needs them.”

Hailie Jack, Executive Director of UWLG, said, “I am very proud of our team. They worked tirelessly over 2023 under difficult circumstances. Our team is ready and excited to hit the ground running in 2024, to engage with our community, donors, and partners. We will forge new relationships and foster existing partnerships. Our applications for grants in 2024 are coming to a close on Feb. 16 ^th , and we have had a 35 per cent increase in applications over last year. The need is greater than ever.”

Community Investment Fund Grants now open for 2024-25

United Way Leeds & Grenville believes that every person deserves the opportunities, access and connections they need to build a good life—regardless of their income, the neighbourhood they live in, or their social identity.

One way we work to achieve this vision is through our grants. Our United Way identifies and awards these to community agencies across Leeds & Grenville with the aim of achieving the greatest impact. Every grant opportunity supports a wide array of services and support for people living in poverty across the region.

Funding for the Community Investment Fund is dispersed to programs in Leeds & Grenville that fall into one of three community impacts areas:

• Helping Kids Be All They Can Be

• Moving People From Poverty to Possibility

• Building Strong and Healthy Communities

Each year our community funding process adapts to the changing and emerging needs locally. We recruit knowledgeable community volunteers to work through a rigorous review process with our staff to ensure that funding is distributed to the areas of most need. Funding is provided to partner agencies for specific programs which allows them the flexibility to develop and respond to the evolving needs of the communities they serve.

Details for 2024/25 Funding Only

• Impact funding applications will be considered for a 12-month period

• This application is for funding starting April 1, 2024 and ending March 31, 2025.

• Funds will be allocated monthly – one-month lag - first payment will be in May 2024

• Funding applications will be assessed on their own merit and what their impact will be on the Leeds & Grenville Community.

• Applications are due on January 31, 2024 at 5 p.m. EST (no late submissions will be accepted).

Brockville, ON . - Today United Way Leeds & Grenville announced the release of the Community Impact Report and Regional Data and launches the Urgent Needs Fund 2024.

Community Impact Report, Regional Data and resulting United Way Leeds & Grenville Urgent Needs Fund: Overview

Over the last year, we held Community Conversations and identified several needs in Leeds & Grenville. The Survey done in the Fall of 2022 identified the top issues in our community as Housing and Homelessness . In 2023 the 11 Community Conversations with 371 people, housing and homelessness were identified often. To address this need from a prevention perspective, United Way Leeds & Grenville is launching an URGENT NEEDS FUND . The URGENT NEEDS FUND is available to people in Leeds & Grenville who are at risk of homelessness due to an extraordinary cost that would leave the person or family at risk of not being able to pay their rent or mortgage that month. The program offers emergency financial assistance with modest one-time grants to address this extraordinary cost such as a winter furnace repair or a car battery for a vehicle that is required to access or maintain employment. This extra cost may cause that family to be at risk of homelessness, which ultimately increases the numbers requiring shelter accommodation or looking for subsidized housing. This experience is devastating and disruptive for the family. URGENT NEEDS FUND will not however, cover housing payments or arrears.

We are following a proven model from United Way Simcoe Muskoka, where they assisted almost 1,800 individuals through their pilot project, as well as our own experience with the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program. United Way Leeds & Grenville will be investing 5% of our available campaign dollars in 2024 into this fund for one-time disbursement to families. Thanks to Rotary Brockville, Brockville Women in Business, the Brockville Business Network and a number of anonymous donors for their support for the URGENT NEEDS FUND .

Providing financial support to households at-risk of homelessness due to poverty, who have emergency or time-sensitive urgent needs that cannot be filled by other available community supports.

This project is the next step in the evolution of the Community Impact agenda and will guide and support the future direction and focus for United Way Leeds & Grenville. Collective Impact, brings people together in a structured way to achieve social change. Using this framework allows United Way to approach old and complex problems in a new way by leveraging likely and unlikely partnerships to change the conditions in our community. Collective Impact is a network of community members, organizations, and institutions who advance equity by learning together, aligning, and integrating their actions to achieve population and systems level change.

NATIONAL HOUSING DAY BLOG POST – Housing Is A Human Right

Canada is in the midst of a housing crisis. Affordability, homelessness, and lack of safe and adequate housing are all growing issues that deeply affect almost every community across the country. United Way Centraide Canada is renewing its focus on housing to shape our unique contribution towards the issues of affordable housing and homelessness for all communities through convening with all levels of governments and within the sector, engaging in policy development for more affordable and accessible housing, and strategic government relations.

Although we know a home should be affordable, millions of people rely on community service organizations to fill the gaps left by inadequate incomes and access to basic needs. Data from 211 show that over 43,000 housing/shelter related needs were expressed by people reaching out to the helpline between January and June 2023, a 22% increase from the previous 6 months (July-December 2022). Additionally, data from York University’s Homeless Hub informs us that at least 35,000 people living in Canada are without shelter on any given night.

People like Marie struggle with juggling the costs of rent and all other essential needs and find themselves in a position to have to choose between shelter or food. Everyone is deserving of a home regardless of their demographics, where they live, or what their financial situation may be. For this reason, United Way Centraides across the country are taking action to build a more equitable future by tackling the housing crisis. We do this by designing and leading programs, providing shelter, and enabling community organizations through collaboration and funding.

United Way Halifax has helped fund housing support organizations like Welcome Housing , Public Good , and The North Grove to address homelessness in Nova Scotia . Alongside partners, service providers, and community groups, United Way Halifax is also working on establishing a community land trust that will make housing more equitable and affordable in the long term. Through the “ 100 More Homes Penticton ,” United Way British Columbia and community partners were able to provide housing for 133 people and counting through a 3-year Memorandum of Understanding with the City of Penticton to collaborate around homelessness and non-market housing planning.

The depth of the housing crisis is glaring when new African refugee claimants and asylum seekers have been forced to sleep on the streets of Toronto upon arrival due to the lack of available, local shelters. To address the situation, United Way Greater Toronto announced over $415,000 in grants to support African resettlement. While these interventions are helping many struggling with homelessness, it is evident that there is a dire need for long-term systemic solutions for housing across our country.

National Housing Day is an occasion to reflect on the state of housing in Canada and spark conversations and action towards alleviating the ongoing crisis affecting most communities. To bolster the work of community organizations and make progress against a more equitable future for all communities across Canada, we urge the Government of Canada to increase investments in affordable housing, adequate income and employment supports, and other community services.

Housing is a human right, not a commodity. Together, we can make a difference and ensure that everyone has a place to call home.

United Way names new Executive Director

United Way names new Executive Director

BROCKVILLE (Nov. 10, 2023) – The United Way Leeds Grenville has named a new Executive Director.

Hailie Jack, an experienced manager in the not-for-profit sector with a health-care background, will start in her new role on November 20, United Way Leeds Grenville Board Chair Ian McFall announced today.

“We are delighted to welcome Hailie to the United Way,” McFall said. “She has the experience and knowledge of our area that we were looking for, but more important, she has the enthusiasm and dedication to serving the community that are essential to succeed in this role.”

Currently, Jack is the office manager of a local medical centre. She is the former Executive Director of the Brockville and Area Food Bank. Prior to that, she was Community Support Services Manager at CPHC Senior Support Services in Brockville. She has extensive experience in health care as a Registered Practical Nurse.

“I look forward to putting my passion for leadership, nonprofit organizations and community strength together to serve such an impactful nonprofit. I have devoted my career to helping others,” Jack said.

Jack noted that Brockville has been her home for many years, she is raising her daughter here, and has a strong connection to communities in Leeds and Grenville. Her experience in health care and later at the food bank has provided valuable insight into the needs of the community.

“I move into this role with deep gratitude at being given the opportunity to serve your local United Way,” she said.

Jack’s appointment follows the resignation of Trish Buote, who left in August to take the role of Executive Director of the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation. The agency appointed Jane Hess as Interim Executive Director while a search commenced for a permanent replacement.

“I’d like to thank Jane Hess for stepping in. Her many years of experience as a community leader were critical to getting the United Way through this crucial transition,” McFall said. “The entire team deserves credit for their hard work and dedication.”

The United Way is in the midst of transitioning to a “community impact” model, McFall noted, which focuses more on identifying community needs and working toward measurable results.

Currently United Way Leeds & Grenville is in the final two months of their annual campaign. With a goal of $935,000 there is still a lot of work to be done to raise the much-needed funds to support the over 15 funded partner agencies. The Community Services Recovery Fund is a one-time investment of $400 million by the Government of Canada to help Community Service Organizations (charities, non-profits, Indigenous governing bodies) adapt, modernize, and be better equipped to improve the efficacy, accessibility, and sustainability of the community services that they are providing through the pandemic recovery and beyond.

· RNJ Youth Services - Connections RNJ: Strengthening our Capacity to Deliver - $12,000

· SCS (Kemptville Seniors) – SCS Volunteer Program Redesign - $20,000

· Thousand Islands Foundation for the Performing Arts - Thousand Islands Playhouse Audience Access Initiative - $20,000

· Thousand Islands River Heritage Society - Digitizing the Glassworks Data - $15,000

Community service organizations are at the forefront of addressing communities’ needs. Since the early phases of the COVID-19 pandemic, they have struggled with increased demand for their services, reduced revenues, declines in charitable giving due to the rising cost of living, and a greater need to make use of digital tools. Many organizations are struggling to recover and adapt their services to the changing needs of Leeds & Grenville.

Gord Brown Memorial Golf Tournament a Success!

BROCKVILLE & KINGSTON, ON – This year’s Gord Brown Memorial Golf Tournament in support of the United Way Leeds & Grenville and the YMCA of Eastern Ontario is a great success thanks to the generosity of people in our region!

The final total raised will be more than $182,000 to support many of the most vulnerable people in our communities.

“Our late MP Gord Brown really set a standard of caring for our community and we are so pleased to be able continue this great work with the support of his family,” said Jane Hess, Interim Executive Director of United Way Leeds & Grenville. “We are thankful for the Brown family’s trust in us to utilize these funds to support health equity in our community through important local programs and services. Working with the YMCA of Eastern Ontario, on the event, we welcomed back so many volunteers, sponsors and golfers who truly care about our communities.”

Larry Robinson, Al Iafrate and Todd Gill kicked off the day with a media event and spent time with fans, signing memorabilia and being available for lots of selfies. The three former NHLers have am affinity for our region. Robinson played for the Brockville Braves and has family in the area. Iafrate began his hockey career in Belleville and loves using hockey as a way to give back to the community. Gill grew up in the area and also played for the Brockville Braves. He said: “I grew up in a small town in Ontario and to do these things is an honour and something I enjoy doing. I get to see a lot of familiar faces, and I have a lot of fun.”

Robinson loves playing the course at Smuggler’s Glen. “My brother and I like to play at least once or twice a year because it’s such a spectacular view.” He added, “Gord did a lot for charity, so it’s great to come back and help the cause.”

“It’s the kind of event where everyone has a good time made even better by the knowledge that by sponsoring, participating or volunteering, they are helping people,” said Rob Adams, CEO, YMCA of Eastern Ontario. “Larry, Al and Todd give their time because they know just how important it is for people to have access to the supports they need. Everyone who helps has shown a lot of heart and we are very grateful to them. We are particularly indebted to the Brown family and their continued support of our communities.”

Lunch aims to provide 1,500 lunches for neighbours in need

As dedicated advocates for community well-being, United Way Leeds & Grenville and 3M Canada are excited to announce the upcoming series of Harvest Lunch events, initiatives aimed at providing a wholesome meal to those in need within our community.

The aim is to provide 1,500 free lunches to the most vulnerable in our local community. As we embrace the bountiful harvest season, we recognize the importance of coming together to support our neighbors who are experiencing hunger. The 3M Harvest Lunch is a heartfelt effort to provide nourishing food, foster connections, and raise awareness about the critical issue of food insecurity.

From September 14th to October 6th, the 3M Harvest Lunch Team will work with six different United Way agencies and hold ten events across Leeds & Grenville to serve and deliver lunches being provided by local businesses. We’re asking our community to show their local love and purchase a lunch. Every $10 ticket sold buys a meal for a neighbour in need in our community. Meals can be purchased on the uwlg.org website. Simply click the yellow 3M Harvest Lunch banner! Note: a tax receipt will be provided.

The 3M Harvest Lunch is a result of the dedicated efforts of numerous volunteers, local businesses, and community members who have come together to make a positive impact. By uniting around a shared goal, we hope to not only fill empty stomachs but also fill hearts with a sense of belonging and care.

[BROCKVILLE, ON] – United Way is pleased to announce the appointment of Jane Hess as the Interim Executive Director of United Way Leeds & Grenville (UWLG). Jane will assume this role on August 14, 2023, bringing a wealth of experience and leadership to guide the organization during this important transition period.

With a distinguished career in health equity, community development, and community impact, Jane is poised to provide strategic direction and continuity to UWLG's ongoing efforts to make a positive impact on the community. As Interim Executive Director, Jane will work closely with the Board of Directors, staff, and community partners to ensure a seamless transition and maintain the momentum of the organization's initiatives.

"We are thrilled to have Jane continue to play a leadership role to our United Way," said Ian McFall Chair of the Board at United Way Leeds & Grenville. "Jane’s proven leadership and deep commitment to our mission make her an ideal candidate to guide us through this period of transition. Todd Gill Joining Forces with the Y and United Way at the Gord Brown Memorial Golf Tournament

The United Way of Leeds and Grenville and the YMCA of Eastern Ontario are pleased to announce another guest celebrity for the Gord Brown Memorial Golf Tournament: former defenceman for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Todd Gill!

Todd Gill was born in Cardinal and spent 19 seasons in the NHL. He played offense, playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs for 10 years, including the 1992-1993 season when the Leafs made the conference finals with Gill scoring 43 points. His hockey career included playing for the St. Louis Sharks as well as for Phoenix, Detroit, Colorado, and Chicago. The last stop in his playing career was with the German Oberliga. After retiring, Gill became a junior hockey coach, first for the the Brockville Braves (2005 to 2011) and then the Kingston Frontenacs (2011 to 2014).

“We are so happy to have Todd join us for this important fundraising event,” said Trish Buote, United Way Executive Director. “As someone from this area, Todd understands the community and the role the United Way and the Y play in helping our most vulnerable citizens live a better quality of life. Todd will make our event even more exciting!”

Rob Adams, CEO of the YMCA of Eastern Ontario said: “When someone donates their time to help us raise money for people in need, it’s really a boost to the event and our community. We are thrilled that Todd has chosen to this fundraiser held in honour of Gord Brown. I am fortunate to know Todd and his participation speaks volumes about his understanding of community need and his desire to help.”

The Gord Brown Memorial Golf Tournament is an event of the United Way Leeds and Grenville and the YMCA of Eastern Ontario; all money raised will go directly into programs offered locally, ensuring that our community continues to receive support and programming provided by both charities.

The late MP Gord Brown’s family is extremely happy to support this year’s golf tournament and is proud to continue Gord’s legacy of giving back to our community. Participating in, or sponsoring this event is a way to make Gord’s vision possible.

United Way Leeds & Grenville (UWLG) seeks to reduce poverty in our community through many means. Food Security is defined as the state of having reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food. Food insecurity, for many in our community, is often a result of complex issues resulting in insufficient means to obtain nutritious and affordable food. These could include families with children, employed people whose low wages don’t cover basic living essentials, individuals on social assistance, and Canadians living on a fixed income, which includes seniors and people with disabilities.

Our community relies on many programs in our community to supplement food needs. As such, UWLG is introducing, with the support of many community partners, the Community Food Security Grant. This one-time grant will encourage innovative and collaborative responses to food insecurity in our community. United Way will provide grants of up to $10,000 to support organizations in Leeds & Grenville to deliver one or more of the following:

· Purchase and distribution of food and other basic necessities to individuals.

· Prepare and deliver nutritious meals to L&G community's homeless and most vulnerable citizens on a regular basis; could include community meals and school meals.

· Enhance and/or expand existing food delivery programs to support more individuals who are hungry and in need.

· Nurtured local garden and growing programs that support the growth and increased consumption of fresh food amongst participants—helping to build valuable gardening skills and a sense of community in the process.

· Programs that deliver education and skills building programming to community members accessing services who are at risk of experiencing food insecurity.

The Youth to Youth (Y2Y) Board of United Way Leeds & Grenville is currently accepting requests for funding from organizations who provide high quality programs and initiatives which would:

· Benefit youth by providing opportunities to improve their physical, emotional and social needs. For example: sports, arts/culture, drama/dance/music.

· Generate a positive outcome for youth including improved academic performance, classroom behaviour, health and nutrition. For example: tutoring, healthy meal or snack, etc.

· Provide at-risk-youth with a safe, welcoming, inclusive environment with access to resources and support which will empower these young people to reach their full potential.

· Encourage youth to work collaboratively to build safe, youth-friendly communities.

Eligibility (MUST be a registered charity as defined by the CRA)

· Each successful applicant will be eligible for ONE Youth to Youth (Y2Y) Board Grant, to a maximum of $500, to be utilized for their program.

· All grant applicants must be located in the United Counties of Leeds & Grenville to benefit the youth in our region.

· Your organization cannot be receiving any other funding from United Way Leeds & Grenville.

· The deadline to file grant applications will be 3:00 pm on Friday, April 14, 2023.

· Late applications will not be accepted.

Our Youth to Youth (Y2Y) Board is selling fudge!

The United Way Youth to Youth board, a youth-driven committee that represents the voices of young people in Leeds & Grenville, has partnered with a local business, the O’Mally Kourt Fudgery , for its first fundraiser of 2023.

18 flavours of fresh fudge, including two limited-edition Easter specials, are available and can be purchased at a price of $11 per half-pound. There is also a coupon option for those who wish to visit and support the shop in person (they also make a great gift). All profits from this fundraiser will help fulfil the mission of the board: to raise awareness and support vulnerable youth in the community.

Pick up will be on April 8 from 10am to 12pm at 42 George Street, Brockville.

Ontario United Ways present four recommendations in a pre-budget submission to build the foundation for equitable prosperity in Ontario.

February 7, 2023 (Toronto, ON) – Ontario’s 2023 Budget comes at a time of both challenge and opportunity for the province. While confronting record inflation, food insecurity, a critical lack of affordable housing, escalating mental health and addiction-related needs, and a greater complexity and demand for community services, the province is growing and revitalizing at a rapid rate. Based on their deep community work, United Ways across Ontario have presented four crucial areas for the province to invest in that will address the growing roots of poverty and create a lasting impact for the people of Ontario. By working together, with community, that future can be a reality shared for everyone, regardless of where they live or the challenges they face.

“There is a future filled with shared prosperity and growth. It starts with making the right investments and rolling up our sleeves to do the work,” says Daniele Zanotti, CEO of United Way Greater Toronto. “United Ways across Ontario are presenting tangible solutions and a promise that in partnership with the provincial government we are ready to utilize our deep community roots and expertise in creating inclusive communities.”

United Ways across Ontario have a unique vantage point for the provincial government, as the largest funder of social services next to government and a leader in cross-sectoral innovation and research designed to create systems-level solutions. In their work with communities across Ontario, United Ways have identified four key recommendations to government that help ensure the 2023 Budget can build a foundation of equitable prosperity and maximize public resources for multiple economic and social benefits.

Ontario United Ways urge government to:

Invest in the community services sector to enable the delivery of critical services that meet the unique needs of diverse communities across the province

Community Investment Fund Grants now open for 2023-24

Funding for the Community Investment Fund is dispersed to programs in Leeds & Grenville that fall into one of three community impacts areas:

• Helping Kids Be All They Can Be

• Moving People From Poverty to Possibility

• Building Strong and Healthy Communities

Details for 2023/24 Funding Only

• Impact funding applications will be considered for a 12-month period

• This application is for funding starting April 1, 2023 and ending March 31, 2024.

• Funds will be allocated monthly – one-month lag - first payment will be in May 2023

• Funding applications will be assessed on their own merit and what their impact will be on the Leeds & Grenville Community.

• Applications are due on February 15, 2023 at 5 p.m. EST (no late submissions will be accepted).

The Community Investment Fund will not be assessed in conjunction with the Community Services Recovery Fund (CSRF). The CSRF application process is managed separately based on its specific criteria.

United Way Leeds & Grenville raises an impressive $1 million for those in most need!

Brockville, ON. - United Way Leeds & Grenville announced today that the annual campaign goal of $935,000 for 2022 has been exceeded. In fact, the team surpassed the target by close to 10% raising $1,011,960!

The Community Investment Committee will soon be hard at work to disperse these dollars where they can have the largest and most positive impact. United Way Leeds & Grenville is committed to stewarding the donations entrusted to us to help make a meaningful difference every single day.

“We knew going into this year’s campaign, that the needs in our community had increased with the effects of the pandemic and that there would be downward economic pressures on our donors. As a result, raising funds would be more difficult and we would have to think outside of the box.” said Trish Buote, Executive Director of United Way Leeds & Grenville. “And that we did,” she added, “Our real thanks go out to all the volunteers and donors who, so generously, responded to these increased community needs. United Way Leeds & Grenville takes part in the Community Services Recovery Fund – a $400 million investment in charities and non-profits

Now more than ever, charities and non-profits are playing a key role in addressing persistent and complex social problems faced by all Canadians. The Community Services Recovery Fund is a $400 million investment from the Government of Canada to support charities and non-profits as they build resilience by making investments in their people, organizations, and program innovation.

United Way Leeds & Grenville is proud to be taking part in the Community Services Recovery Fund, a collaboration between United Way Centraide Canada, Canadian Red Cross, and Community Foundations of Canada to provide funding to Community Service Organizations, including non-profit organizations, Indigenous Governing Bodies, and Registered Charities located across Canada. The Community Services Recovery Fund responds to what charities and nonprofits need right now and supports organizations as they adapt to the long-term impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Government of Canada’s has made an announcement about the investment in the Social Services Sector through the Community Services Recovery Fund (CSRF).

The Community Services Recovery Fund is a $400 million investment from the Government of Canada to support charities and non-profits as they focus on how to adapt their organizations for pandemic recovery. Now more than ever, charities and non-profits are playing a key role in addressing persistent and complex social problems faced by all communities. The Community Services Recovery Fund responds to what charities and non-profits need right now and supports organizations as they adapt to the long-term impacts of the pandemic.

Originally announced in Budget 2021, the CSRF will enable charities to invest in organization capacity to improve the efficacy, accessibility, and sustainability of community services, including in the following ways:

• adapt the way they deliver services to support the needs of their staff and volunteers;

• buy equipment such as computers and software;

• create new ways of working, such as developing new fundraising approaches;

• provide support for staff and volunteers, such as staff training, supports for mental health, and well-being; and

• develop plans to receive funding from diverse sources.

Due to the depth of our knowledge and understanding of the needs in communities across Canada, United Ways, Community Foundations and the Canadian Red Cross, have been designated as key distributors of this fund to communities across Canada. In order to maximize our impact in the community, United Way Leeds & Grenville will be partnering with our local Community Foundation to assess applications and distribute funds.

Each funding partner has specific granting guidelines and applications for all will open on January 6 ^th , 2023. Every community will receive an allocation of funds to grant out as per government guidelines. Our United Way will be holding two webinars to present the specific granting guidelines, funding inclusions and exclusions, as well as provide an opportunity to ask questions.

United Way Leeds & Grenville Announces New Community Impact Officer

Brockville, ON - As a follow-up action to our report released earlier this year, United Way Leeds & Grenville (UWLG) is moving our community impact agenda forward. We are so pleased to welcome Jane Hess to the United Way Leeds & Grenville team as a Community Impact Officer effective Sept.13/22. Jane is well known to many in Leeds and Grenville from growing up in Kemptville, teaching nursing at St. Lawrence College and her years of experience with the LGL Health Unit. Jane has a passion for Health Equity, the Social Determinates of Health and the power of community to work together to improve life for all.

“I am convinced that Jane will add another layer of success to our Community Conversations as we transition from pandemic life”, said Trish Buote UWLG Executive Director. “Our United Way is committed to Health Equity and providing opportunities for success for all citizens. UWLG as an enabler of change, plans to partner with communities, community partners and citizens in Leeds and Grenville to achieve social change.”

Jane will be reaching out to key influencers in the communities to have them identify those who will contribute by identifying their shared concerns, visions and strategies to create diverse community teams to support innovation for social change. Communities working together will increase capacity and impact, powered by UWLG!

3M Harvest Lunch aims to provide 1,500 lunches for neighbours in need

September 9, 2022: Brockville, ON.

3M Canada and United Way Leeds & Grenville are teaming up again this year to launch the region’s second 3M Harvest Lunch on September 16 ^th .

The United Way Leeds & Grenville 3M Harvest Lunch aims to provide 1,500 free lunches to the most vulnerable in our local community. That is a 50% increase in target over 2021 because the number of food insecure individuals and families in our community continues to grow.

From September 16 to October 7th, the 3M Harvest Lunch Team will work with six different United Way agencies and hold eleven events across Leeds & Grenville to serve and deliver lunches being provided by local businesses. We’re asking our community to show their local love and purchase a lunch. Every $10 ticket sold buys a meal for a neighbour in need in our community. Meals can be purchased on the uwlg.org website. Simply click the yellow 3M Harvest Lunch banner! Note: a tax receipt will be provided.

“We are thrilled to offer the 3M Harvest Lunch event again this year in our Leeds & Grenville area. 3M is an amazing partner who shares our values of caring and supporting this community.” says Trish Buote, Executive Director United Way Leeds & Grenville. “This program is a WIN, WIN, WIN, WIN! The effects of the pandemic continue to take a toll in our region, with more people than ever struggling to access healthy food, safe housing, and other basic needs. The local food bank, for example, is experiencing drastic increases in food cost and difficulty procuring items due to shortages. Marginalized youth and seniors are often going hungry because they do not have access to food on a regular basis. This is a basic necessity of life.

As our community continues to face challenge and uncertainty, the 3M Harvest Lunch and its team of dedicated volunteers will kick off what we hope will be our most successful United Way Campaign yet.

Gord Brown Memorial Golf Tournament a Success!

This year’s Gord Brown Memorial Golf Tournament in support of the United Way Leeds & Grenville and the YMCA of Eastern Ontario has demonstrated the generosity of people in our region!

The final total raised is $186,367, which also includes funds raised from live and silent auctions. Monies raised will be shared between the two organizations in support of the most vulnerable people in our communities.

“We are so pleased to be able to support the great work of the late MP Gord Brown and his family by raising money for the community,” said Trish Buote, Executive Director of United Way Leeds & Grenville. “Gord really set a standard of care and we are thankful for the Brown family’s trust in us to utilize the funds to help sustain important local programs and services for those who most need them. Finally, we were delighted to collaborate with the YMCA of Eastern Ontario, on the event, and welcome back so many volunteers, sponsors and golfers who truly care about our communities”

Darryl Sittler and Rick Vaive were big hits with the crowd, signing memorabilia and being available for lots of selfies.

“Darryl and Rick added to people’s enjoyment of the day and their participation helped to raise money for the Y’s financial assistance program,” said Rob Adams, CEO, YMCA of Eastern Ontario. “The YMCA of Eastern Ontario is so pleased to have strengthened our partnership with United Way Leeds & Grenville, and on behalf of our two organizations I wish to thank all of the amazing staff and volunteers who made the event a reality. Position: Community Impact Program Officer (6-month Contract) – 3 days/week

Reports to: Executive Director

PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF JOB

The role of the Program Officer is to support United Way Leeds & Grenville’s community impact work by; working with community partners and the community at large, providing research & data collection, recruiting volunteers to support the work, reporting and evaluating processes and serving as an active member of the Community Impact team. This position will function as the project leader for the Community Conversations project and assure proper administration.

The job description is to be used as a guideline only and may not incorporate all functions of the job; education and experience outlines are ideal qualifications/assets but do not necessarily reflect the requirements of the position.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

This project is the next step in the evolution of the Community Impact agenda for United Way Leeds & Grenville and will support its future direction and focus.

The project will ask the community for input by hosting open conversations across Leeds & Grenville where anyone can attend and provide their thoughts. These conversations will be a forum for various communities to explore the opportunities or challenges that they face. We will ask questions around the best pathway forward for our United Way.

Data collected and findings from the project will be added to the overall data analysis that will be completed. A report on finding, focus and next steps will be provided to key community leaders as well to the community at large.

Responsiblities

Support and oversee process functions of community impact work, research, data collection and reporting processes. Specific duties may include:

Implements the Community Conversations Project. Provide leadership and information to staff, committees and program review teams involved in the project.
Takes the lead in orienting, training, and managing volunteers for the session panels/teams. Coordinates activities of volunteers related to the project.
Builds on-going relationships with partners to ensure procedures and reporting systems are understood and supported. Provides guidance and support to partners throughout the project cycle.
Facilitates the Community Conversations project including session planning, participant recruitment, volunteer recruitment, data reporting as defined by the evaluation.
Monitors compliance with reporting requirements

Retrieves data from sessions, presentations, marketing, and other venues for sharing results and impact.
Assists in the development of reports to the Board of Directors and the community
Remains knowledgeable of community trends, needs, and gaps.
Supports the planning and implementation of community impact strategies.
Other duties as assigned.

· Valid Driver’s license and required minimum insurance coverage

Brockville, ON – United Way Leeds & Grenville releases Our Strategic Journey – Step One Report to the public.

The Step One Report was released last week during United Way Leeds & Grenville’s Annual General Meeting. It outlines United Way’s progress on its strategic journey to address key systemic issues in the Leeds & Grenville community. The report highlights the approach they will take to narrow the focus around key issues and priorities in the community where the United Way can have a significant impact.

To this end, United Way Leeds & Grenville will explore the possibilities of a collective impact strategy which will focus on a collaboration between organizations, community and institutions. This approach will be deeper and more strategic than simply partnering on a project. It will mean coming together and collaborating in new ways.

“If we want to improve the resilience of our communities, we need to better understand the root causes of critical social issues in Leeds & Grenville, and how we can close the gap,” said Ian McFall, President of the Board of Directors, United Way Leeds & Grenville. “The community, including United Way’s network of agencies and partners, is an important bridge to understanding the critical issues and delivering the right solutions. This report is an important first step to letting the public know where we are heading and how we will invest important donor dollars.”

Communities across Canada are facing many complex social issues that affect every facet of daily life. Those who are struggling with issues have been further marginalized by the pandemic. The Leeds & Grenville community is not immune to these issues; in fact, we are just beginning to see the fall-out. United Way is on a journey to actively identify the key issues by listening to our communities through direct conversations and through the expertise of the social service agencies that provide services.

Brockville, ON: NHL Hockey Hall of Fame member, Darryl Sittler, will join us for the 2nd Annual Gord Brown Memorial Golf Tournament on Wednesday August 17 at Smuggler’s Glen Golf Course!

Hockey legend, Darryl Sittler played for the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Philadelphia Flyers, and the Detroit Red Wings from1970 to 1985. He holds an unbroken record for scoring 10 points in a single hockey game, scored the winning goal at the 1976 Canada Cup, and he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1989.

United Way Leeds & Grenville and the YMCA of Eastern Ontario are collaborating on the event and all money raised will go directly into programs offered locally, ensuring that our community continues to receive support and programming provided by both charities.

“We are extremely excited and proud to have one of Canada's greatest hockey legends join us for this important event for our community,” said Trish Buote, United Way Executive Director. “Throughout his career and in his retirement, Darryl has been a strong advocate for healthy communities. His beliefs align so well with both our United Way and the YMCA.”

The past two years have put a lot of pressure on members of our Leeds & Grenville community. Returning to a fully healthy and prosperous community is the ultimate goal.

“Whether you’re a hockey fan or not, there isn’t a Canadian who doesn’t know the name Darryl Sittler,” said Rob Adams, CEO, YMCA of Eastern Ontario. “We are thrilled that he has chosen to support this event and our community. It speaks to his long commitment to public service and his understanding of how difficult the past two years have been. Stepping up to support social and health-based programs demonstrates just how important these programs are.”

The return of the golf tournament will honour the Late Gord Brown’s legacy of giving back to our great community. Gord would be amazed that Darryl Sittler, #27 and his favourite professional hockey player, would join us for this event.

The tournament will attract golfers of all levels who are looking to support a worthy cause and enjoy a beautiful course.
